What's the MOST powerful tool in Coaching?
Video Recording is a powerful tool in Coaching. It allows the learner to step outside of him or herself and observe the recorded interactions as the "Watcher". As the Coach, reviewing the video together provides you the opportunity and information to be able SEEK and REFLECT with the learner. You may choose to watch the entire video from start to finish, in order to EXPLORE with the learner from a BIG PICTURE perspective or start and stop sections of the video, digging deeper into the DETAILS. Together, taking this information to build and run DRILLS.

So if there is such great value in video recording, WHY is it so HARD to get staff to do?
All of the points that make video recording valuable also make it scary. Your learners now have a recorded history of their Ah-oh's. As the Coach, you are able to pause, freeze, and replay every misstep. Videos can turn into a weapon, and no longer a powerful tool. Do you remember your first time being videoed?
So what CAN we DO?
Use your MOST powerful tool - PPA to CONNECT!
Just as the relationship is most critical, not the outcome of one encounter, when supporting a person living with dementia, so is your connection with learners.
Lead by example. Video yourself and share with learners your own Ah-oh's and Ah-ha's.
Video the Great Moments too. Capturing staff on video when they are SHINING, not only when you are working on a skill or a challenging situation.
How do you use your most powerful tool of PPA to connect with your learners and truly become partners in this coaching cycle?
